‘A  Marriage  Proposal’  is  a  very  interesting  play  written  by  Anton Chekhov  a  well-known  dramatist  and  a  short  story  writer  of  Russia. 

“A Marriage Proposal” रूस के प्रसिद्ध नाटककार और लघु कथाकार Anton Chekhov द्वारा लिखित एक बहुत ही दिलचस्प नाटक है।

Three  main characters  of  the  play  are  :  Choobookov  who  is  a  land  owner, his  twenty-five  years  old  daughter  Natalia and  Lomov who is their neighbour, a healthy well-fed but highly hypochondriac & land owner who is  35  years  old. 

नाटक के तीन मुख्य पात्र हैं: चूबूकोव जो एक ज़मीन का मालिक है, उसकी पच्चीस साल की बेटी नतालिया और लोमोव जो उनका पड़ोसी है, एक स्वस्थ, पोषित लेकिन अत्यधिक हाइपोकॉन्ड्रिआक है। और ज़मीन का मालिक है जो 35 साल का है।

The  comedy  results  from  the  temperamental  weaknesses  of  these characters  who  frequently  enter  into  heated  discussions  and  arguments  over  minor issues. One day early in the morning Lomov went to his neighbor Chubukov’s house. Lomov was dressed in morning coat and gloves.

कॉमेडी इन पात्रों की स्वभाविक कमज़ोरियों का परिणाम है जो अक्सर छोटी-छोटी बातों पर गरमागरम चर्चा और बहस में पड़ जाते हैं। एक दिन लोमोव सुबह-सुबह अपने पड़ोसी चुबुकोव के घर गया। लोमोव ने सुबह का कोट और दस्ताने पहने हुए थे।

Choobookov was naturally happy to welcome him. He asked Lomov that why he was so unnecessarily formal  about  his  dress.  Lomov  was  very nervous  and  unable  to  express  the  real  purpose  of  his  visit. 

चूबुकोव स्वाभाविक रूप से उसका स्वागत करके प्रसन्न हुआ। उन्होंने लोमोव से पूछा कि वह अपनी पोशाक को लेकर अनावश्यक रूप से इतने औपचारिक क्यों हैं। लोमोव बहुत घबराए हुए थे और अपनी यात्रा के वास्तविक उद्देश्य को व्यक्त करने में असमर्थ थे।

Choobookov repeatedly asked Lomov to tell the real purpose of his visit but Lomov was terribly nervous and unable to reply. His throat became dry and he asked for water and sipped it slowly .At one stage Choobookov suspected that perhaps he had come to ask for some money.

चूबुकोव ने लोमोव से बार-बार पूछा कि वह उसकी यात्रा का वास्तविक उद्देश्य बताए लेकिन लोमोव बुरी तरह घबरा गया और उत्तर देने में असमर्थ हो गया। उसका गला सूख गया और उसने पानी माँगा और धीरे-धीरे पीने लगा। एक समय तो चूबुकोव को संदेह हुआ कि शायद वह कुछ पैसे माँगने आया है।

So he told Lomov to say whatever he wanted. At that time Lomov said that he had come to ask for his daughter Natalia’s hand in marriage. Choobookov was very happy and excited to hear this.

इसलिए उन्होंने लोमोव से कहा जो बोलना है बोलो । उस समय लोमोव ने कहा कि वह शादी के लिए अपनी बेटी नतालिया का हाथ मांगने आया था। यह सुनकर चूबुकोव अत्यधिक प्रसन्न और उत्साहित हुआ।

He began to hug and kiss Lomov and said that he had been yearning to hear this for centuries. He went inside to call Natalia but did not tell her why Lomov had come. Natalia came out and greeted Lomov.

उसने लोमोव को गले लगाना और चूमना शुरू कर दिया और कहा कि वह सदियों से यह सुनने के लिए तरस रहा था। वह नतालिया को बुलाने के लिए अंदर गया लेकिन उसे यह नहीं बताया कि लोमोव क्यों आया है। नतालिया बहार आई और लोमोव का अभिवादन किया।

She  also  expressed  her surprise  on  seeing  her  neighbour  in  the  formal  dress. Lomov inadvertently mentions Ox-Meadows and states that the land belongs to his family. Natalia was very angry with that claim because there was some controversy over it.

उन्होंने अपने पड़ोसी को फॉर्मल ड्रेस में देखकर हैरानी भी जताई. लोमोव ने अनजाने में ऑक्स-मीडोज़ का उल्लेख किया और कहा कि यह भूमि उनके परिवार की है। नतालिया उस दावे से बहुत नाराज़ थीं क्योंकि उस पर कुछ विवाद हुआ था।

The arguments between Natalia and Lomov became endless with accusations against each other’s families. When the heated argument continued between them and both tried to shout at each other, Choobookov came out. He joined Natalia in staking his claim to Ox-Meadows.

नतालिया और लोमोव द्वारा एक-दूसरे के परिवार पर आरोप लगाने से उनके बीच बहस अंतहीन हो गई। जब उनके बीच गरमागरम बहस जारी रही और दोनों ने एक-दूसरे को चिल्लाने की कोशिश की, तो चूबुकोव बहार आया । वह ऑक्स-मीडोज़ पर अपना दावा जताने में नतालिया के साथ  शामिल हुए।

He explained to Lomov that Ox-Meadows had considered his claim unfair but Lomov remained refused. When Lomov leaves, Choobookov tells Natalia that Lomov had actually come with a proposal to marry her. Surprisingly that had a magical effect on Natalia.

उन्होंने लोमोव को समझाया कि ऑक्स-मीडोज ने उनके दावे को अनुचित माना है लेकिन लोमोव इनकार कर दिया। जब लोमोव चला जाता है, तो चुबुकोव नतालिया को बताता है कि लोमोव वास्तव में उससे शादी करने का प्रस्ताव लेकर आया था। आश्चर्य की बात है कि नतालिया पर इसका जादुई प्रभाव पड़ा।

She started insisting that Lomov must be brought back. And, when Lomov came. They started arguing about the superiority of their pet dogs. Meanwhile, Lomov started having trouble breathing and his condition took  a  worse  turn. And he became unconscious.

वह उन्मत्त हो गई और जिद करने लगी कि लोमोव को वापस लाया जाना चाहिए। और, जब लोमोव आये. वे अपने पालतू कुत्तों की श्रेष्ठता को लेकर बहस करने लगे। इसी बीच लोमोव को सांस लेने में दिक्कत होने लगी और उनकी हालत काफी खराब हो गई । और वो बेहोश हो गया।

Natalia suspected Lomov was dead and wanted a doctor to be called immediately. Choobookov repented for what had happened. He asked Natalia to bring some water.

नतालिया को संदेह था कि लोमोव मर गया है और वह चाहती थी कि तुरंत एक डॉक्टर को बुलाया जाए। जो कुछ हुआ उसके लिए चूबुकोव को पश्चाताप हुआ। उसने नतालिया से थोड़ा पानी लाने को कहा.

Lomov got revived after sipping a few drops of water. And then, Choobookov forcibly pushed their hands  into  a  union  and  the  marriage  proposal  was considered  to  be  accepted.

पानी की कुछ बूँदें पीने के बाद लोमोव को होस आ गया। और फिर, चूबूकोव ने जबरन उनके हाथ एक संघ में धकेल दिए और विवाह प्रस्ताव को स्वीकार कर लिया गया माना गया।
